Nominated for a GRAMMY, ‘Walking on Broken Glass’ was a challenge to conceive. When Annie presented her sketch, it reminded me more of Loui Loui by the Kingsmen. I wanted to do something like ‘Village Ghetto Land’ by Stevie Wonder. The sound Stevie used on Village Ghetto Land was produced by an instrument called a Yamaha GX1 and Stevie called it his ‘Dream Machine’. Sounding like some other wordly string quartet, It was one of the first analogue polyphonic synthesisers. I made the string sound for ‘Walking on broken glass’ with a Yamaha TX816 (essentially 8 DX7s in a rack) and came up with the string riff, in a neo classical style. My first GRAMMY Nomination.
