Soul Bossa.

Quincy Jones.

I was commissioned by the ENDIMOL GAMING DIVISION to produce a version of ‘Soul Bossa’. Famously re appropriated by Austin Powers, this is my ‘forensic’ copy of the Quincy Jones 1962 recording of Soul Bossa-Nova. I’m unconvinced that the ‘Cuica’ that Wikipedia quotes as responsible for the ‘laughing sound in the opening bars’ was in fact a cuica, but in this version I emulated this sound with my voice. Also to my surprise and delight, I discovered that the piano in the original was performed by a young Lalo Shifrin (he went on to write the scores for the Bullet and Mission Impossible themes, among many others). I loved recreating the beautifully unfettered jazz piano that Lalo played and laboured to ensure Roland Kirk’s overblown flute part was represented down to near atomic levels.
