Don’t cry alone.

Robin and I had been writing and recording for what would become his last album 50 St. Catherine’s Drive. During this process, Robin and I grew close and understood we had much in common in our outlook and humour. As I had originally been a session musician and latterly producer on various Bee Gees albums and some of Robin’s earlier solo work, our relationship had matured to the point where we could almost anticipate what each other was thinking. When we wrote ‘Don’t Cry Alone’, we agreed that I would start to play some chords and Robin would improvise a melody and lyric simultaneously. This, in turn, would prompt me to play some other chords or melody and so on. Spontaneously! I followed Robin and Robin followed me. I recorded every live take that we did until a song appeared from the mist. ‘Don’t cry alone’ is totally improvised and its composition is a result of decades of knowing and admiring the man. Poignant though ‘Don’t cry alone’ is, my lasting memory of Robin is what fun and what joy it was to write and record that song with him.
